Venues & Supporters

Open Venues:

Suggest a venue in the comments to get it added to this list! Anywhere that has been affected adversely by the earthquakes, whether it was damage to their building, road closures, loss of foot traffic, having to make staff cuts, new premises, evacuations, or even if staff had personal losses and you want to support them! Include any info you can with your suggestion to make it easier for me to update the list! The venue name links to the venue on Foursquare. For their website, please click the link at the end of each item.
  • Winnie Bagoes - Lost their original premises after the Sept 4th quake and suffered damage in the Boxing Day aftershocks also. Support them by checking in here or at the Ferrymead restaurant! - Website
  • Blackwell's, Kaiapoi - The front of the building was badly damaged and the store had to be abandonded until it's fate could be decided. Late in the afternoon on the 4th the facade and parapet of the building was demolished to make it safe from further aftershocks. Blackwell's Department Store is open for business again in the temporary location of 154 Williams Street, on the round-about opposite McDonald's. - Website
  • Otautahi Tattoo - Caught between two different cordoned off areas on Hereford Street, these guys have lost a lot of foot traffic and their tattoo artists have been sitting around without any skin to ink. They are open and would love to see you! - Website
  • ConneXion JewelleryRegistry Additions Building, Market Square, Arts Centre. ConneXion Gallery in the Old Boy's High building was damaged after the earthquake on September 4th and they have just opened their new premises in the Arts Centre. - Website
  • Elegant Fashion Boutique - 54 Wordsworth St, Sydenham. They suffered a dramatic downturn in business because of barriers and fences in Sydenham and now are very worried about the future of the store. They have great pre-loved women's clothes, high quality at very affordable prices. Ladies, its time to brave the cordons to score yourself this wicked deal: 10% discount to anyone who checks-in to Elegant Fashion Boutique on Foursquare!
  • Mitchelli's Cafe - Cnr Ash/Poplar Lane. Difficulties in getting to the cafe due to barriers/cordons not just from earthquake damage but also tram tracks & now rumours of work to the sewerage pipes in the area. - Website
  • C1 Cafe - 150 High Street. Same as Mitchelli's, hard to get to because of barriers & also were closed for 2 weeks after the inital quake as well as being closed down for a few days after the Boxing Day earthquakes (anyone who has lived in the Highpara flats will probably know why!) - Website
  • Canterbury Cheesemongers - Arts Centre Registry Building. Recently reopened in new premises, months after their original building was demolished. - Website
  • The Globe Cafe - 171 High Street. While they had only superficial damage (1 window broken) during the earthquake, nearby buildings have required repairs and the scaffolds have had a dramatic effect, scaring their punters away. So don't let the scaffolds put you off a great cuppa!
  • Lush - Shop 110, Cashel Mall. Shops all down that side of Cashel Mall were badly damaged by the Boxing Day earthquakes. Foot traffic is down. Weren't informed about Boxing Day Replay sale so missed out on the opportunity to offer a sale in conjunction (according to the woman I spoke to there.) Also tucked right next to large scaffolding so difficult to see they are open. Also have to be my most favourite company in the whole world! - Website (currently down)
  • Alchemy Restaurant & Bar - Christchurch Art Gallery. Cnr Montreal & Worcester Boulevard. Closed for a period after the inital Sept 4th quake, on-going issues relating to quakes. Generally finding foot traffic in CBD down, deserted during Boxing Day Replay. Website
Closed Venues Which Need Support/Publicity/Help:
  • Godley House, Diamond Harbour - It has been closed since the quake and its future is unknown, it may be in danger of being demolished. Many people have signed petitions for the Council to have it repaired, but it seems nothing is being done. It's closure has impacted the community in a huge terrible way. Loss of business, loss of tourists and loss of community. Please help it get more attention by spreading the word! - Website
  • Fishmongers - 177 Victoria Street -  They've lost their building, may not be able to reopen. According to Andrew, they have the best fish and chips in town!  - DineOut Page

    1. Godley House at Diamond Harbour has been closed since the quake and is in grave danger of being demolished, I fear. Many of us have signed petitions for Council to have it repaired, but it seems nothing is being done. It was our local pub, our source of take aways and it's closure has impacted the community in a huge terrible way. Loss of business, loss of tourists and loss of community. Please help it get more attention: http://www.godleyhouse.co.nz

    2. Thanks Kalena! Great suggestion, I didn't know about this one, exactly the kind of thing we need to support! Going on the list right now! I can just imagine how terrible that would be for the community! ~Rachel

    3. Suggestions emailed to me earlier by Rumpelsnorcack:

"The cheesemonger at the Arts Centre (and actually I'd think that all the businesses there have been affected since so much of it was damaged and perception was a little off for a while).
The florist on Hills Road. I don't even know what it's called because the building has been demolished and she's operating out of a shed beside it while the building is rebuilt.
Tea's Me on High Street just cause I love them. Also on their blog it says they were closed by the Boxing Day quake for the rest of the day and I know shopping in that part of the city was down in the days afterwards due to rain and fear of further quakes. I'd say a lot of those smaller shops in the centre of town would be similarly affected.
Comics Compulsion on Manchester Street - after the quake they were one of the few shops able to open down there, but it was hard to get to and that must have been a drain. They have been only just outside the cordon around Manchester Courts this whole time as well so foot traffic would have been lower.
Also there is an Asian restaurant (whose name I've forgotten) in the Triangle Centre which no-one knows is still open since a lot of the stuff in there is closed."

I will update the list with these soon.

In my opinion, the best fish and chips in Christchurch...

    5. Great suggestion Andrew, thanks! I'll put them on the list, what can we do to help them? Do they have a temporary site?
